The Old Courthouse, Cockermouth | Co-Curate

The Old Courthouse, no. 2 Main Street in Cockermouth dates from 1829. It was built to replace the old Moot Hall and incorporated a court house/Town Hall, Bank, and News Room. The building is adjacent to Cocker Bridge and the rear of the building backs on to the River Cocker. The Old Courthouse is a Grade II listed building on the National Hearitage List for England. In more recent times, the building hosted several small busnisses and the Honest Lawyer restaurant. The building was undermined by a series of floods. In November 2021, the building was declared unsafe after further heavy rain left its rear wall on the verge of collapse. The building had not been used since then. The restaurant, was sold at auction in 2022.
