It seems with each passing day, a new battle royale game or mode is being born, ranging from AAA-titles like Black Ops 4 to even some of the most unexpected titles like Maple Story 2's Mush King Royale Championship.
Spicing up the battle royale potluck of titles is a brand new game from China based game studio, DreamGame Studio called "Swordsman". The new game features graphics, art styles and gameplay that are heavily inspired from the Ancient Chinese Wuxia legends.
Taking a different approach from the usual battle royale games like PUBG and Fortnite, Swordsman really utilizes the setting of ancient China, focusing instead on melee weapons and the different move sets that come with it. Some of these weapons include the long sword, broad sword and twin rapiers. Ranged weapons still exist like the bow & arrow, throwing daggers and smoke bombs, all which look to play out more like support tools to hinder enemies. Players will also get to collect skills and abilities found in the form of martial arts tomes/manuals to learn and master, following a similar vein to Realm Royale's ability system. Aside from these martial art tomes, there are also books that can strengthen your character's offensive and defensive abilities. Back stabbing is also an interesting feature that players can utilize by equipping a dagger and silently attacking their foe from an unsuspecting angle, resulting in an instant kill. While this sounds fun, how it will work in terms of balance is yet to be seen. Will Swordsman do well in the genre and rise up to be a contender to PUBG and Fortnite? We'll have to wait for more news from the developers to find out, in the mean time the game has just ended its beta period.Bryan Yap is an intern at IGN SEA, and is looks to play out his Wuxia fighting fantasies in the Swordsman beta.
