Spoiler-Free Synopsis

We're telling the whole world... It's the greatest because it's the original.

"A pure heart and a strong desire to meet"...the mythical pokemon Mew is said to only appear before those adventurers who possess both. Researchers from all over the world have been chasing after that which is said to be the genesis of all pokemon until finally, one day, a scientist discovered a Mew fossil and dirtied his hands by crossing a line that even God is afraid to cross.

"What is this place...Who am I..."

A legendary pokemon was dragged into this world due to man's egotistical desire to create the strongest pokemon. That pokemon's name is Mewtwo. Without knowing the reason for its existence Mewtwo is subjected to experiment after experiment to make it the strongest weapon and, during all this, begins to plot against the humans who brought it into this world.

"And so to the humans who gave birth to me I will...strike back."

At long last, that perfect masterpiece will STRIKE BACK in full 3D-CG worldwide in Summer 2019.

The first teaser for the film premiered after the end credits of the previous film, Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story," started showing in Japan on July 13th, 2018. The pamphlet for Everyone's Story also included a brief advertisement (below) stating that a brand new movie will be coming in Summer 2019 (劇場版最新作2019年夏公開決定!).

Pamphlet Teaser

This will be the second Pocket Monsters movie in a row to debut on a Friday instead of a Saturday.

The first poster for 2019's movie is an homage to the very first poster made for the original Mewtwo Strikes Back!

Original Theatrical Poster

Movie 22 is simply referred to as "Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution"; the "Pocket Monsters the Movie" (or "Pokémon the Movie") bit that usually proceeds the film's title is nowhere to be seen in any of the promotional materials released so far.

This is the first full length Pocket Monsters movie for which the voices were recorded before the animation was completed. In Japanese animation the norm is to dub the voices in after the animation's finished, not before. Pokémon the movie XY "Pikachu and the Pokemon Band," released in 2015, was also scored beforehand.

While Shoko Nakagawa is indeed involved in the movie's ending theme this is the first movie since Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl The Movie "Dialga vs. Palkia vs. Darkrai"in which she does not voice any of the movie's characters.
