Marvel's comic book solicitations for January 2015 came out yesterday. And if you haven't seen those yet, there was some unfortunate news for She-Hulk fans. The current volume of She-Hulk, which is written by Charles Soule and drawn primarily by Javier Pulido, will be ending with issue #12 in January.
It's hard to say what Marvel's motivation for canceling the series was. Sales for She-Hulk aren't spectacular, but comparable to other Marvel titles featuring female leads like Black Widow and Captain Marvel. Certainly, the critical response to She-Hulk has been positive since it debuted earlier this year. The series is often compared to books like Matt Fraction's Hawkeye and Mark Waid's Daredevil in terms of offering a unique approach to superhero storytelling. It's worth noting that Soule recently wrapped up the Death of Wolverine mini-series this month, which is leading into a number of epilogue projects and the weekly comic Wolverines. With Wolverines also launching in January, it may be that Soule had to prioritize his comic book workload.
Soule said on Twitter yesterday that he'll be commenting on the cancellation soon, so hopefully we'll find out more about the fate of Jennifer Walters and if Marvel has immediate plans for her after the series wraps. The good news is that the publisher announced a new wave of female-led superhero books at NYCC earlier this month, including Gamora, Silk, and Spider-Gwen.
