Introduction :
Dr Holly Krieger is a mathematical genius & a university lecturer at a prestigious academic institute.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Holly was born on November 19, 1983, and was raised in Chicago.
- Currently, she resides in Cambridge, England.
- Dr. Holly was pregnant in 2021, and had her baby daughter around mid-2021. During her pregnancy, she posted a few pictures on her Twitter account.
Education : Qualifications, High School & College Info
- When she was younger, Holly’s dad introduced her to a variety of different math & logic puzzles, deductive reasoning, and the proofs of early Euclidean geometry, which she enjoyed doing and excelled at.
- In 2006, Krieger attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and received her degree in Mathematics
- Initially, she attended the university as a Biology student, but after experimenting with science, psychology, Italian, and computer science, she finally decided to pursue a degree in mathematics.
- She described choosing mathematics as the feeling of ‘intellectual passion’ for the first time since the age of twelve when she was in geometry class.
- When Holly decided to major in Mathematics, she made a conscious and intentional choice to work as a record store clerk & bartender to maintain her social life and be around ‘normal’ people that she found more interesting than her academic peers.
- She went on to further her education and earned a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).
Career, Job, Salary and Net Worth :
- Holly is now a Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, as well as the Director of Studies and Fellow in Maths at Murray Edwards College. Murray Edwards College is one of the few women-only colleges in Cambridge.
- Her current research interests are in the ever-growing field of arithmetic dynamics, which involves the studies of the relationship between dynamics of one complex variable and the arithmetic geometry of abelian varieties.
- Holly has been invited along to speak at a number of public talks – in 2016, she was a panel member for ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ discussion at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- She also did a talk for LMS Girls on Mathematics Day and was Project Leader for ‘Women in Numbers 4’ in Banff, Canada.
- In 2017, she spoke at the John Adams Institute in Amsterdam.
Height of Social Media Fame :
- Krieger has appeared in several episodes on the YouTube Channel ‘Numberphile,’ an entire platform dedicated to numbers and mathematical revelations. The channel has a whopping subscriber count of more than 3-million.
- Two of the episodes, she starred in were called ‘The Mandelbrot Set’ and ‘63 and -7/4 Are Special,’ which each went on to gain over one million views.
- Holly has over 15,000 followers on her Twitter (now called X) Profile.
Awards and Achievements :
- The Emily Mann Peck Scholarship in Mathematics from 2005-2006
- A postdoctoral fellow for a semester in model theory, arithmetic geometry, and number theory in Spring 2014
- The NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from 2013-2016 and the Isaac Newton Early Career Support Scheme in 2018.
